A Journey through Advent

Matt and I often find ourselves having conversations that begin with, “When we have kids, let’s do things this way.” This most often involves some form of reading scripture, or memorizing the psalms, or making sure we put the focus on the right things during the holidays. It can be very easy to talk about all of these things and be confident that “when we have kids” we’ll just pick up those habits and show our best side. However, we all know it doesn’t work that way. We realized that if we ever plan to pass these things on to our children, we must begin practicing and participating in such disciplines now, in order that they become second nature to us.

The thing that has come up most recently, and the one we’re focusing on for now, is the Christmas season. We ‘ve talked about ways to make sure we understand the true importance of Christmas, and how we can pass that on to our family.

So let’s talk about Advent, the time of hopeful anticipation for the arrival of a savior. Until recently, I never paid any attention to what Advent was or meant. I just knew it was something that went on around Christmas time, and that, in our tradition, it isn’t something we talk about. However, through Matt’s passion and study of liturgy, I became aware of the church calendar. I started asking Matt question after question, with a real desire to learn more about how we can use these long-standing traditions to develop within us a steady rhythm of scripture, prayer, and worship. In many ways, following the church calendar sets the foundation for that rhythm.

So this year we’re going to do something a little different. I’m not going to post videos of Christmas songs counting down to Christmas Day (don’t worry, there will still be a Christmas Day song from Matt and Lauren!). Instead, we have temporarily renamed this blog Hopeful Expectations: A Journey through Advent. Starting tomorrow, on the first day of Advent, as Matt and I study together, we’ll share some thoughts here through the season of Advent. We invite you to join us on this journey, participating in the weekly readings, prayers, reflections, and study of Advent as we wait in hopeful expectation for the coming of our Lord.

Austin Beerworks

First of all, let me just say something. Matt and I don't drink beer constantly. :) We do, however, enjoy visiting many of the different breweries in the Austin area. There are a lot of them, and it's neat to try different local craft beers and hear the different stories about how they came to be and how the beers are made. We do enjoy that.

So on Saturday we went to Austin Beerworks. The beer was good, the people were nice, and the brewery was COLD. I snapped one picture of Matt while we were there.

According to our Austin Beer Guide, we've been to about half of the breweries in town. We've still got a few more to go, I guess!

Gungor Brothers

Two of my favorite bands are Gungor (led by Michael and Lisa Gungor) and The Brilliance (led by David Gungor). They both have some new videos out, so I'll share one of each.

First, Gungor's song The Best Part. Now, if you are not familiar with Gungor's music, don't let this be the deciding factor on whether or not you ever listen to them again. :) This song is kind of weird, but if you've followed their music in the past, you can appreciate the weirdness of it, and the many different styles of music they incorporate into their albums.

Now, a song by The Brilliance called Breathe (not a new song, but a new video).

Enjoy!

4th Anniversary

We made it through four years! Even better, we still like each other! Happy Anniversary, Mr. Porter!

To celebrate we went to The Cheesecake Factory and split the chicken piccata, which is one of my favorite dishes ever (and yes, we split it... even for our anniversary I'm too cheap to pay for two entrees PLUS cheesecake there!). We topped it off with a Fresh Banana Cream Cheesecake. People. Drive yourself to the nearest Cheesecake Factory and get a piece. It's fantastic. The only downside to that adventure was that it was ridiculously dark in the restaurant. Very frustrating, but also so extreme that we couldn't help but laugh about it. It was silly. I took a picture of Matt, who was no more than 2 feet in front of me, just so you can get an IDEA of what it was like in there.

After dinner we went and saw HARRY CONNICK, JR. It was a fantastic show. He is very dreamy talented.

We had a nice date night out on the town celebrating our four years of marriage!

Ginny

Matt took some cute pictures of Ginny. I had to share.

(if you haven't figured it out on your own, let me fill you in on a little secret: we like our dog)

Clean Bed

I asked Matt to clean off the bed in our front bedroom. This is what I found...

Goofy boy.

New Buddy

We watched a friend's kid tonight while they went out for their anniversary. He buddied up with Matt in a hurry. Ginny LOVES kids and was so sweet with him, but she did NOT want to be left out of any of the fun. Anywhere Matt and J went, Ginny had to be there, too.

I left the room for a bit and when I came back in I found J in Matt's lap, and Ginny sitting RIGHT next to Matt on the couch. Ha!

Matt and J were playing "rodeo" and Matt had been playing the part of the bucking bull. Later, I walked into the kitchen and Ginny was drinking some water. I came in right as J grabbed her collar and lifted one leg as if he were about to climb on! I quickly intervened (if you remember, Ginny's hips are not good at all!), but couldn't stop laughing for a solid 10 minutes.

We had a good time. We were a bit worn out at the end of the night, but it was fun. :)
